Who Would Have Thought?
In 1963, a pole vaulter named Brian Sternberg(!) injured his spinal cord while training on a trampoline. I was nine years old at the time, and I remember my grandfather calling me up on the phone and telling me about the article in the newspaper describing the accident. Brian had broken the pole vault record twice that year, and was on his way to becoming an Olympic champion. He had an experimental surgery in 1996 which generated some new press. SCI Therapy and Rehabilitation
Many people find it difficult to locate rehab facilities that specialize in SCI. Good rehab facilities are few and far between. Even if you find a good one, chances are your time there will be limited by insurance or Medicaid. There are a handful of facilities in this country that are taking a different approach. They offer intense exercise and therapy programs that run from 15 to 25 hours per week. They are producing great results, however it is very expensive and is not covered by insurance. Hopefully, this situation will change. Check out the links below to get an idea of what these people are doing for SCI patients.
